Urban Shadow was recognized with the 2009 International Achievement Award (IAA) presented by the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) for its exceptional specialty fabric project. The purpose of the project was to provide a screening structure for i/o Data Centers’ data storage cooling towers. This facade faces and is visible from a nearby freeway and is neighboring a health care facility. The client specifically asked that we give maximum screening without restricting air movement. The louvered effect of the panels is a dynamic, beautiful and functional way of solving the client’s request to maximize screen without restricting air flow. Maximum screening was achieved by incorporating the tensioning device within the perimeter cable, allowing the connection of the sail’s corners as close to the anchor points as possible. The client is pleased with the structure for the screening it provides and the way in which it provides it. It helps to blend the facility into its surroundings.
